Dear Gramps:
I am writing to inquire as to whether a 1951 Mercury V8 crankshaft and camshaft will fit into a 1947 Ford V8 block. If so, how much horsepower will the Engine gain? If this will fit, what alterations are required?

Answer
Actually, a ’51 Mere cam will not easily interchange with the ’47, As a matter of fact, unless some particular rules limit your cam use to stock cam, I’d not even concern myself with this swap. There are so many superior regrinds (either new or used) around that will drop right in without any modification that it would be senseless to waste your time and money trying to install a cam with so little advantage. As for the crank, you are in much better shape. It will drop right in the flywheel will bolt on and the cam gear will fit too. You will, however, have to use Merc pistons to compensate for the longer stroke and different pin location. Although ’51 rods use locked rod inserts your early type full-floating inserts will work perfectly.
