Fordlândia, also known as Ford-land, lies within a district and adjacent area spanning 14,268 square kilometers (5,509 sq mi). In the city of Aveiro, situated in the Brazilian state of Pará. It occupies the eastern banks of the Tapajós river, approximately 300 kilometers (190 mi) south of Santarém.
American industrialist Henry Ford established Fordlandia in the Amazon Rainforest in 1928. As a prefabricated industrial town with the intention of housing 10,000 people. Fordlandia aimed at securing a source of cultivated rubber for the automobile manufacturing operations of the Ford Motor Company. Ford negotiated a deal with the Brazilian government. The government granting him a concession of 10,000 km2 (3,900 sq mi) of land. Which was located on the banks of the Rio Tapajós near Santarém, Brazil. In exchange for a 9% share in the generated profits. Henry Ford’s project failed utterly at this location, leading to the abandonment of the city in 1934.
The town remained mostly deserted. 90 residents still inhabiting it until the early 2000s, when it experienced an increase in population. As of 2017, it was home to around 3,000 people.
